General Description
The Red Irian Rainbow, a member of the Melanotaeniidae family, is a popular and vibrant Rainbowfish species. The males exhibit bright red coloration, while the females have a silvery hue. These fish are characterized by their large eyes, a distinctive black or silver band along the middle scale rows, a deeply forked mouth, and two dorsal fins. In the absence of females, the males may appear less colorful.
Aquarium Setup
The Red Irian Rainbow thrives in a planted aquarium with ample free-swimming space. It is essential to avoid excessively dense planting to accommodate their active nature. A gravel substrate, particularly dark in color, can help intensify the fish's vibrant hues. A minimum tank size of 200 litres is recommended for these peaceful fish.
Behaviour
Known for their peaceful temperament, Red Irian Rainbows are schooling fish that prefer to be kept in groups. They are active swimmers and should have plenty of space to move around in the aquarium.
Feeding and Diet
As omnivores, Red Irian Rainbows benefit from a diet that includes a variety of prepared and live foods. Despite their large mouths, they have narrow throats, so small-sized foods are ideal. Providing a mix of live and prepared foods ensures their nutritional needs are met.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
The Red Irian Rainbow, like other Rainbowfish, is an egg-layer. During spawning, which occurs over several days, they deposit eggs on moss. It is advisable to remove the adult fish post-spawning and rear the eggs separately. Young fry should be fed with very small live foods to support healthy growth.
Habitat and Distribution
Native to the waters of Irian Jaya in Indonesia, Glossolepis incisus, the Red Irian Rainbow's scientific name, inhabits freshwater streams and lakes in the region. They thrive in environments with a pH range of 7.0-8.0, water hardness between 9-19 KH, and a temperature range of 22.2-25.0°C.
