General Description
Boesman's Rainbowfish, scientifically known as Melanotaenia Boesemani, is a popular and uniquely-patterned species in the aquarium hobby. This species, though widely available in the trade, is actually rare in its natural habitat and listed as endangered on the IUCN red list. Adult specimens of Boesman's Rainbowfish are seldom seen, with juveniles typically offered for sale. The full color development of these fish can take over a year, making them a prized addition to freshwater aquariums.
Aquarium Setup
Boesman's Rainbowfish thrives in a minimum tank size of 110 liters and looks stunning in a planted aquarium setup. They prefer areas with dense vegetation along with open spaces for swimming. Efficient filtration and tank maintenance are essential to support the development of the vibrant colors in male individuals. The choice of plants should cater to the slightly hard, alkaline water conditions preferred by these fish. For specific water parameter details, refer to the table provided.
Behaviour
This species is generally very peaceful but may disturb smaller or slower tank mates due to their rapid movements and relatively large size. Boesman's Rainbowfish are best kept in groups of at least 6-8 individuals to minimize skittish behavior and encourage color displays in males. Ideal tank mates include similarly-sized rainbowfish, characins, danios, barbs, and catfish like Corydoras. They can also coexist with many Rift Lake cichlid species due to similar water requirements.
Feeding and Diet
Boesman's Rainbowfish are unfussy eaters and accept a variety of dried, frozen, and live foods. Regular feedings of live foods can enhance the vibrant colors of these fish. Juvenile Boesman's Rainbowfish may take over a year to attain their full coloration potential.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Breeding Boesman's Rainbowfish is relatively straightforward as they are egg scatterers. The fry, however, can be challenging to raise. Breeding tanks need alkaline water, abundant in oxygen, with fine-leaved plants for spawning. Selecting well-conditioned pairs for spawning and providing optimal conditions can induce successful spawning. Mature males exhibit brighter colors and larger size compared to females, with a deeper body shape as they grow.
Habitat and Distribution
Boesman's Rainbowfish are native to Indonesia, specifically from the Ajamaru lakes in the remote Vogelkop Peninsula of Irian Jaya and Lakes Hain and Aitinjo nearby. They are usually found in clear shallows with dense aquatic vegetation. The lakes they inhabit are characterized by hard, alkaline water, although variations in water chemistry are observed in some surrounding tributaries.
