General Description
The Melanotaenia Maccullochi, commonly known as the Dwarf Rainbowfish, is a species with a maximum size of 7.0cm. It is an omnivorous fish, accepting various dried, frozen, and live foods, with live foods enhancing its coloration.
Aquarium Setup
For optimal health and color display, the Dwarf Rainbowfish thrives in a heavily planted tank with slow water flow. Maintaining high water quality with weekly partial water changes is crucial. The ideal tank size is a minimum of 55 liters, providing open spaces for swimming and territories for male displays.
Behaviour
This species is characterized as very peaceful and adaptable to various water chemistry conditions. It is recommended to keep them in shoals of at least 6-8 individuals to reduce skittish behavior. The presence of conspecifics encourages males to exhibit vibrant colors.
Feeding and Diet
Being an omnivorous species, the Dwarf Rainbowfish readily consumes dried, frozen, and live foods. Regular feedings of live foods contribute to the fish's color vibrancy.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Breeding Dwarf Rainbowfish is relatively straightforward, as they are egg scatterers. The fry, however, may be challenging to raise. Mature males exhibit brighter colors, longer dorsal, and anal fins compared to females. Reproduction requires alkaline water, a pH of around 7.5, a temperature of 80-84°F, and the presence of fine-leaved plants or spawning mops.
Habitat and Distribution
Native to Papua New Guinea and Australia, the Dwarf Rainbowfish thrives in a range of habitats, from flowing streams to turbid ponds with varying water chemistry. Known to congregate around cover like aquatic vegetation and submerged logs, this species showcases adaptability to diverse environments.
