Behaviour:

The Freshwater Moray Eel is highly piscivorous and may even strike at much larger fishes on occasion, making it best kept alone in all but the very largest aquaria. However, if maintained in a group, a sufficiently large tank with individual refuges for each is necessary to prevent aggression.

Feeding and Diet:

This species is an obligate predator, preying on smaller fishes and crustaceans in nature. Newly-imported specimens may initially only accept live food but can usually be transitioned to dead alternatives. Avoid feeding mammalian or avian meat, feeder fish, or goldfish to reduce the risk of introducing parasites or diseases.

Reproduction & Dimorphism:

Information on the reproduction of the Freshwater Moray Eel is unreported, as is any sexual dimorphism present.

Habitat and Distribution:

Gymnothorax Tile is widespread in coastal regions of the Indo-West Pacific, ranging from eastern India to the Philippines and down to Australia. The type locality for this species is the Ganges River estuaries near Calcutta, India.

Aquarium Setup:

While marketed as a freshwater species, incorporating a marine salt mix is crucial for this eel. The optimal salinity is roughly 15 g/l. Adequate cover in the aquarium, such as rock piles or PVC piping, is required. Maintaining high oxygen levels, moderate water movement, and good water quality with regular 30-50% water changes is essential. Additionally, due to their escapism tendencies, a secure lid is necessary for the tank.
