General Description

The Aborichthys Elongatus, commonly known as the "red-tailed squirrel loach," is a species belonging to the Nemacheilidae family of Cypriniformes. It is a slender fish characterized by its elongate body with uniform depth, oblique narrow stripes, and a black spot at the upper extremity of the base of the caudal fin. This species typically grows to a maximum size of 7.5cm and is mainly found in streams and rivers with rocky substrates in northeastern India.

Aquarium Setup

To successfully maintain the Aborichthys Elongatus in captivity, it is recommended to set up a 60-liter tank resembling a flowing stream or river. The tank should have slightly cooler, slightly acidic to neutral water conditions with a pH range of 6.5-7.5 and a temperature of 15-21°C. Substrates should consist of rocks, sand, fine gravel, and large boulders, with driftwood branches providing ample hiding spots. Adequate water movement and oxygen levels are crucial, requiring a powerful external filter or a powerhead. While most aquatic plants may struggle, hardy varieties like Java fern or Anubias spp. can be attached to the decor.

Behaviour

The Aborichthys Elongatus is not particularly aggressive but has specific requirements that make it unsuitable for typical community tanks. It is best kept in groups of six or more specimens, displaying loosely sociable behavior. Inappropriate tank mates, such as slow-moving or bottom-dwelling species, should be avoided to prevent aggression or feeding competition. Observation of amusing interactions within the group is common, with occasional aggressive behavior that should not escalate in a well-structured tank setup.

Feeding and Diet

In its natural habitat, this species feeds on insect larvae, worms, crustaceans, and zooplankton. In captivity, it accepts dried foods but benefits from regular meals of small live or frozen foods like Daphnia, Artemia, and bloodworms. The Aborichthys Elongatus is an aggressive feeder with a keen sense of taste, often displaying frenzied feeding activity when food is introduced to the tank.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Information on the reproductive behavior of the Aborichthys Elongatus in aquarium settings is currently unreported. Adult females are typically fuller-bodied than males, with both sexes sharing similar patterning. However, there are reports of an undescribed species resembling female A. Elongatus, featuring additional body bars and dark blotch-like markings in the caudal fin.

Habitat and Distribution

The species is primarily found in shallow, swiftly-flowing stretches of streams and minor rivers in northeastern India, specifically in the Darjeeling District of West Bengal. Its habitat consists of rocky substrates with cavities and caves, devoid of aquatic plants but rich in biofilm. Several closely related species are traded under the name A. Elongatus, collected at lower altitudes, hinting at possible undiscovered variations within its distribution range.
