General Description

Nemacheilus Longistriatus, commonly known as the Laos Blackline Torpedo Loach, is occasionally available in the aquarium trade. It can be distinguished by its elongated body with dark, saddle-like markings along the dorsal surface and roundish dark blotches along the flanks. Belonging to the family Nemacheilidae, this species is native to the mainstream of the Mekong River in Thailand and Laos. The genus Nemacheilus is characterized by features such as a complete lateral line, caudal fin forked to deeply forked, and large eyes.

Aquarium Setup

For optimal maintenance of Nemacheilus Longistriatus, it is recommended to replicate a flowing stream or river environment in the aquarium. This involves a substrate of rocks, sand, fine gravel, and water-worn boulders, along with driftwood branches to provide hiding spots. Hardy aquatic plants like Microsorum or Anubias can be incorporated. Adequate dissolved oxygen and water movement should be ensured through power filters, powerheads, or airstones. Regular water changes of 30-50% tank volume are essential to prevent organic pollutant buildup.

Behaviour

Nemacheilus Longistriatus is peaceful with conspecifics and thrives when kept in groups of four or more individuals. It appreciates the company of peaceful open water-dwelling cyprinids, which can boost its confidence in the aquarium setting. It may cohabit with species like Gastromyzon, Beaufortia, or Garra, but caution is advised with territorial or aggressive fishes.

Feeding and Diet

A typical omnivore, Nemacheilus Longistriatus feeds primarily on small insects, worms, and zooplankton in the wild. In captivity, it accepts dried foods but thrives on a diet of small live or frozen fare like Daphnia and bloodworms. Offering a variety of live and frozen foods ensures optimal coloration and condition in this species.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Details on the reproduction of Nemacheilus Longistriatus are currently unrecorded. While no external sexual dimorphism is evident, adult females are likely slightly larger and heavier-bodied than males. Male individuals may possess thickened pectoral-fin rays, a common trait in Nemacheilus species.

Habitat and Distribution

Found in the Mekong River and its backwaters with bedrock or sand substrates, Nemacheilus Longistriatus hails from Thailand and Laos. Little is known about its ecological preferences, although it may venture into temporarily flooded areas during water level fluctuations. The species is likely found in regions with moderate water flow and adequate dissolved oxygen levels.
