General Description

Paracanthocobitis pictilis, commonly known as the Cherry-Fin Loach, is a species previously misidentified but now distinguished by various morphological characteristics. Belonging to the Nemacheilidae family, this loach is typically found in shady, fast-flowing areas with a preference for clear, oxygen-rich waters. With an average size of 9.1cm, these fish require a minimum tank size of 80 litres to thrive in captivity.

Aquarium Setup

For optimal care of the Cherry-Fin Loach, it is recommended to replicate its natural habitat in the aquarium. This includes a substrate of rocks, sand, fine gravel, and large boulders, along with driftwood for shelter. While most aquatic plants may not thrive in these conditions, hardy species such as Microsorum or Anubias can be added. Clean, well-oxygenated water with a pH range of 6.5-7.5 and a temperature between 21-26°C is essential for their well-being.

Behaviour

Known to be bolder and less peaceful than other loach species, the Cherry-Fin Loach thrives best when kept with active, similarly-sized schooling fish. Male individuals may exhibit territorial or aggressive behavior if kept in small numbers, making it advisable to maintain a mixed-sex group of at least six to promote a balanced social dynamic.

Feeding and Diet

In the wild, this species likely feeds on insect larvae such as chironomids and ephemeropterans. In captivity, they will accept sinking dried foods but should also be offered a varied diet of live and frozen fare, including Daphnia, Artemia, and bloodworms. A diverse diet is crucial for their overall health and vitality.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Details regarding the reproduction of Paracanthocobitis pictilis remain unrecorded. Sexual dimorphism is observed in males possessing specific anatomical features like a suborbital slit, thickened pectoral fin rays, and reddish pigmentation during breeding. Females lack these traits but may exhibit a shallow groove under the eye in some instances.

Habitat and Distribution

The Cherry-Fin Loach is primarily found in the Ataran River and Mae Khlong watershed in Thailand, inhabiting fast-flowing stretches with rocky substrates. They coexist with various fish species like Parambassis pulcinella and Botia kubotai in these ecosystems. The Nemacheilidae family, to which this species belongs, is widely distributed across Eurasia, with particular concentrations in the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, and China.
