General Description

Paracanthocobitis zonalternans belongs to the family Nemacheilidae and is classified under Cypriniformes. This species is characterized by traits such as an incomplete lateral line, an axillary pelvic lobe, and a wide interorbital space. It is suggested that Paracanthocobitis zonalternans might be part of a species complex due to variations in geographic distribution, color patterns, and morphometric differences.

Aquarium Setup

For optimal care, a tank of at least 60 liters is recommended for Paracanthocobitis zonalternans. The aquarium should replicate a slow-moving or marginal stream environment with a sandy substrate, water-worn boulders, driftwood, and dried leaves. Aquatic plants like Microsorum, Bolbitis, or Anubias species can be added for cover. Bright lighting and a mature hill stream-type setup with rocky aquascape are beneficial. Routine water changes of 30-50% tank volume per week are advised. Detailed water conditions include a pH range of 6.0-7.5, hardness of 36-179ppm, and a temperature between 20-25°C (see table).

Behaviour

Paracanthocobitis zonalternans is a peaceful fish best kept in a mixed-sex group of at least six individuals. In the aquarium, it displays interesting social interactions and hierarchy formation among males. It is compatible with peaceful cyprinids, rheophilic loaches, and stream-dwelling gobies but should not be housed with aggressive bottom-dwellers to prevent conflict.

Feeding and Diet

This species is likely a micropredator feeding on insect larvae such as larval chironomids and ephemeropterans in nature. In captivity, Paracanthocobitis zonalternans accepts sinking dried foods but requires regular meals of small live and frozen foods like Daphnia, Artemia, and bloodworms for optimal health.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Successful breeding methods include providing a separate breeding tank with adequate filtration and substrate for egg protection. Males develop yellow to reddish-orange coloration in finnage and mouthparts, while females are larger and lack these color characteristics. Breeding activities occur naturally, with up to 300 eggs produced in a single spawning event.

Habitat and Distribution

Paracanthocobitis zonalternans is found in river systems across locations such as Manipur, Myanmar, Thailand, and possibly Peninsular Malaysia. It inhabits a range of biotopes from headwaters to larger rivers, favoring shallow riffles with pebbly substrates. Various species coexist in its habitats, including different fish and invertebrates, contributing to the ecosystem's biodiversity.
