General Description
Schistura aizawlensis is a species collected for the aquarium trade, distinguished by 5-7 broad vertical bars on flanks in adults, an orange patch near the caudal-fin base, and males with a sub-orbital flap. Belonging to the Nemacheilidae family, it is part of the Schistura genus, known for its rich species diversity and unique morphological characteristics.
Aquarium Setup
Maintaining S. aizawlensis in an aquarium mimicking a flowing stream is recommended, with substrate of rocks, sand, and fine gravel. Driftwood branches can be added for hiding spots, and hardy plants like Microsorum or Anubias can thrive. Additional powerheads or airstones can provide water movement, and regular water changes are essential for optimal conditions.
Behaviour
These loaches prefer habitats with high dissolved oxygen levels and can be intolerant to organic pollutants, requiring clean water to thrive. While not needing torrent-like conditions, the presence of oxygen-rich water and some flow is advantageous for their well-being.
Feeding and Diet
In their natural habitat, S. aizawlensis likely feeds on small insects, worms, crustaceans, and zooplankton, with minimal plant matter. In captivity, a varied diet of live, frozen, and dried foods should be provided to enhance coloration and overall health.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Information on the reproduction of S. aizawlensis is currently unrecorded. However, males can be distinguished by the presence of a suborbital flap, a feature absent in females, showcasing a clear sexual dimorphism in the species.
Habitat and Distribution
The species is native to the Muthi River system in Mizoram, India, which is part of the Barak watershed in northern India. Found in moderately to strongly-flowing streams with gravel substrate, S. aizawlensis shares its habitat with other fish species like unidentified Garra, Psilorhynchus, and Glyptothorax.
