General Description

Schistura aurantiaca, a member of the Nemacheilidae family within the Cypriniformes order, is a small loach distinguished by its unique color pattern composed of vertical orange bars on each flank. This species, part of the Schistura genus, may not be commonly found in the aquarium trade but is identified by its distinctive features, including moderate mouth arch, and tail shape.

Aquarium Setup

To successfully maintain Schistura aurantiaca in captivity, it is recommended to recreate conditions resembling a flowing stream environment in a tank of at least 90 liters. The setup should include a substrate of rocks, sand, gravel, and boulders, along with driftwood branches for hiding spots. Hardy aquatic plants like Microsorum or Anubias can be added for decoration. Regular water changes of 30-50% tank volume are essential to ensure water quality.

Behaviour

The behavior of Schistura aurantiaca is likely to mirror that of its genus counterparts. As an omnivorous species, it feeds on small insects, worms, crustaceans, zooplankton, and occasionally plant matter. In an aquarium setting, they actively feed on live and frozen foods, displaying quick movements to catch passing morsels in flowing water conditions.

Feeding and Diet

In their natural habitat and aquarium setup, Schistura aurantiaca consumes a varied diet that includes small insects, worms, crustaceans, and zooplankton. While they can accept dried foods, their diet should primarily consist of live and frozen fare such as Daphnia, Artemia, and bloodworms to maintain optimal coloration and health.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Information regarding the reproduction of Schistura aurantiaca is currently unreported, and there is no apparent sexual dimorphism based on existing descriptions. The species' reproductive behavior and distinctive traits related to gender differences remain undocumented.

Habitat and Distribution

Nemacheilidae species like Schistura aurantiaca typically inhabit riffles and clear, oxygenated streams with substrates of sand, gravel, and rocks. Found in the Kwai Noi River system in Thailand, this species thrives in environments with specific water parameters, such as temperature between 20-26°C, pH levels of 6.5-8.0, and moderate hardness (36-215ppm).
