General Description
At the time of documentation, Schistura callichroma, a species rich in Nemacheilid loaches, had not been maintained in aquariums. They are distinguished by various morphological features including mouth shape, color patterns, and fin markings, with some species exhibiting clear sexual dimorphism. Most Schistura species inhabit flowing streams with high oxygen levels and rocky substrates.

Aquarium Setup
To mimic their natural habitat, a tank for Schistura callichroma should resemble a flowing stream with rocks, sand, gravel, and boulders. It is recommended to use a powerful external filter, powerheads, or airstones to achieve proper water flow and oxygenation.

Behaviour
The aquarium behavior of Schistura callichroma is not well-documented. They are observed to be robust fish and are suggested to be kept away from slow-moving or long-finned tankmates. In the wild, they form social groups of up to six individuals, indicating that keeping them in groups may be feasible in larger aquarium setups.

Feeding and Diet
In the wild, Schistura species are omnivorous, primarily consuming small insects, worms, crustaceans, and zooplankton. In an aquarium setting, they should be fed a varied diet that includes live and frozen foods like Daphnia, Artemia, and bloodworms to maintain their coloration and health. They can also accept suitable-sized dried foods but should not be fed these exclusively.

Reproduction & Dimorphism
Details about the reproduction of Schistura callichroma are not recorded. Adult males exhibit sexual dimorphism, being smaller in size than females and possessing extended dorsal and pectoral fins. Sexually mature individuals may also develop enlarged lips and mouthparts.

Habitat and Distribution
Schistura callichroma is primarily found in clear, well-oxygenated streams with rocky substrates. Their distribution includes the Red River basin in Yunnan Province, China, with potential occurrences in northern Vietnam and Laos. The Red River basin experiences varying flow rates and turbidity, typical of a tropical monsoon region known for violent floods.

Etymology:
The genus name "Schistura" is derived from Greek words meaning "to divide" and "tail," referring to the caudal fin shape of many species.
