Behaviour
This species of loach is known to be feisty and may not be suitable for a general community aquarium setup, as tankmates need to be chosen carefully to avoid conflict. Slow-moving or long-finned species should be avoided due to potential issues with water movement and fin nipping. Territorial Schistura loaches tend to target placid bottom-dwellers such as Corydoras or Pangio spp. Other compatible tankmates include species that inhabit similar biotopes like Danio, Devario, and smaller Barilius, Pethia, Puntius, and Rasbora spp. It's recommended to provide plenty of rocky structures and broken lines of sight in the aquarium to reduce aggression, especially if keeping multiple Schistura together.
Feeding and Diet
Schistura denisonii are largely omnivorous, with their diet consisting mainly of small insects, worms, crustaceans, and zooplankton, supplemented by small amounts of plant matter and organic detritus. In the aquarium, they readily accept small live and frozen foods like Daphnia, Artemia, and bloodworms, in addition to suitable-sized dried foods. Regular feeding with a variety of live and frozen foods helps enhance their coloration and overall condition, particularly in setups with flowing water.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Information on the reproduction of Schistura denisonii is currently unreported. Sexually mature males of this species may develop enlarged lips and mouthparts, displaying some sexual dimorphism. The species may exhibit clear distinctions between genders in certain characteristics.
Habitat and Distribution
Schistura denisonii typically inhabits clear, well-oxygenated streams near watersheds and headwaters with substrates consisting of sand, gravel, rocks, and boulders. These environments are often shaded by forest cover and lack aquatic plants. Found in regions such as the Western Ghats, these loaches face challenges due to water pollution and habitat degradation caused by human activities. The species is known to be present in the Western Ghats, specifically in areas like the Tunga river, alongside various other sympatric fish species.
Aquarium Setup
To maintain Schistura denisonii successfully, replicate a flowing stream or river environment in the aquarium. Use a substrate of rocks, sand, fine gravel, and water-worn boulders, combined with driftwood branches to create sheltered spaces. Hardy aquatic plants like Microsorum, Bolbitis, or Anubias spp. can be incorporated. These loaches will establish territories in the tank, emphasizing the need for a well-structured environment with adequate oxygen levels and water movement. Weekly water changes are essential to avoid organic pollutant accumulation.
