General Description

Schistura kengtungensis, classified under the order Cypriniformes, is an omnivorous loach species characterized by its body bars and distinct coloration patterns. This species, part of the Nemacheilidae family, is distributed in the middle Mekong River basin in Thailand, Myanmar, and southern China. It can reach a maximum size of 6.5cm and is yet to be found in the aquarium trade.

Aquarium Setup

For Schistura kengtungensis, an aquarium setup resembling a flowing stream or river is recommended. The tank should contain variably-sized rocks, sand, fine gravel, and water-worn boulders. Additionally, driftwood branches can be added to create hiding spots. Hardy aquatic plants like Microsorum or Anubias spp. can be grown in such conditions. It thrives in clean water with a high proportion of dissolved oxygen and benefits from water movement, requiring power filters, powerheads, or airstones for proper oxygenation. Routine water changes of 30-50% tank volume are essential to maintain water quality.

Behaviour

The specific aquarium behavior of Schistura kengtungensis is currently unknown. However, it is considered to be a robust fish. Caution is advised when selecting tankmates, as slow-moving or long-finned species may not be compatible due to unknown behavior traits.

Feeding and Diet

While Schistura kengtungensis is omnivorous, its diet mainly consists of small insects, worms, crustaceans, and zooplankton. In captivity, a varied diet including live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, Artemia, and bloodworms is recommended to enhance coloration and health. Dried foods can also be provided but should not be the sole source of nutrition.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Reproduction details of Schistura kengtungensis are unrecorded. However, sexually mature females are expected to have a deeper body compared to males. Variations in body size and morphology exist among different specimens from various geographical locations.

Habitat and Distribution

This species inhabits shallow, narrow streams with gravel or stony substrates in regions like north and northeastern Thailand, Myanmar, and southern China. Specific habitats, such as the Nam Mae Mao, are characterized by fast-flowing, rocky streams. Sympatric species within its natural ecosystem include Schistura poculi, Lepidocephalichthys berdmorei, and Devario laoensis.

Etymology: The genus name Schistura is derived from the Greek words meaning 'to divide' and 'tail', describing the caudal fin shape common in many species.
