General Description
The Schistura kodaguensis, belonging to the Nemacheilidae family under the Cypriniformes order, is a lesser-known aquarium fish originating from shallow streams with gravel substrate. This species, with a maximum size of 3.6cm, is distinguishable by certain physical characteristics such as vertically split body bars and an incomplete lateral line. It has an incomplete lineage with over 100 described species post-1990 and thrives in high oxygen-level environments like flowing streams.
Aquarium Setup
To ensure the optimal maintenance of Schistura kodaguensis, it is recommended to set up an aquarium mimicking a flowing stream or river. The tank should include a substrate of varied rocks, sand, fine gravel, and some water-worn boulders. Driftwood branches can be added to create hiding spots and shaded areas. While most aquatic plants struggle in such conditions, hardy varieties like Microsorum, Bolbitis, or Anubias species can be grown attached to the décor. It is essential to maintain high oxygen levels with the use of power filters, additional powerheads, or airstones. Regular 30-50% water changes are necessary to prevent the accumulation of organic pollutants.
Behaviour
Schistura kodaguensis thrives well in the company of small, peaceful cyprinids in the upper levels of the aquarium. This behavior can help make benthic species less reclusive. However, caution is advised when considering tank mates, as some similarly-shaped relatives such as Nemacheilus, Acanthocobitis, and Schistura species are territorial or aggressive. In larger aquariums, a combination of these species may work. Rheophilic loaches from some genera and grazing cyprinids are also viable tank mate options.
Feeding and Diet
In their natural habitat, Schistura kodaguensis feed on small insects, worms, crustaceans, and zooplankton, with minimal plant matter. In an aquarium setting, they readily accept appropriately sized dried foods but should not be fed exclusively with these. Offering daily meals of small live or frozen fare such as Daphnia, Artemia, and bloodworms will enhance their coloration and overall condition.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Information on the reproduction of Schistura kodaguensis in captivity is unrecorded. However, sexually mature females are expected to be deeper-bodied than males, especially when gravid. Nuptial males may display more vibrant colors compared to females.
Habitat and Distribution
The species originated from the Kotu Hola near Merkara in Karnataka, India, corresponding to Kootu Hole in Coorg District of the Western Ghats mountains. Although the broader distribution remains unclear, it is confirmed to dwell in tributary streams of the Cauvery (Kaveri) River system. The Nemacheilidae family, including Schistura kodaguensis, is prevalent across Eurasia, with a notable concentration of species diversity in the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, and China.
