General Description
Schistura Nicholsi, also known as Nemacheilus nicholsi, is a species of loach belonging to the family Nemacheilidae. These loaches have a distinctive appearance characterized by 8-10 dark bars on their body, a black bar at the base of the caudal fin, and other unique coloration patterns. They can grow up to 7.4 cm in length and are often found in clear, well-oxygenated tributary streams and headwaters.
Aquarium Setup
The recommended tank setup for Schistura Nicholsi involves mimicking a flowing stream or river habitat. A substrate of rocks, sand, fine gravel, and water-worn boulders is ideal. Decorate the tank with driftwood branches to create hiding spots and broken lines of sight. Hardy aquatic plants like Microsorum, Bolbitis, or Anubias spp. can be added. It is crucial to maintain good water quality with sufficient dissolved oxygen and some water movement. Regular water changes of 30-50% tank volume are recommended.
Behaviour
Schistura Nicholsi is not particularly aggressive but requires careful consideration when selecting tankmates. Slow-moving or long-finned species are not suitable companions as they may struggle with the necessary water movement. Placid bottom-dwellers are also at risk of territorial aggression. Suitable tankmates include species that inhabit similar biotopes in nature, such as Danio, Devario, and smaller Barilius. Maintaining a group of Schistura Nicholsi is possible in a well-structured tank, but occasional skirmishes may occur.
Feeding and Diet
These omnivorous loaches primarily feed on small insects, worms, crustaceans, and zooplankton. In the aquarium, they can accept dried foods but should be supplemented with small live and frozen fare like Daphnia, Artemia, and bloodworms for optimal coloration and condition.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Schistura Nicholsi has been observed breeding in an aquarium setting with young fish appearing alongside the adults. Adult loaches may consume both eggs and fry, indicating potential cannibalistic behavior. No sexual dimorphism has been recorded in this species.
Habitat and Distribution
Endemic to the Mekong basin in Laos and Thailand, Schistura Nicholsi is typically found in tributary streams with clear, oxygen-rich water. They prefer habitats shaded by forest cover, with substrates composed of sand, gravel, rocks, and boulders. These loaches are part of the diverse Nemacheilidae family, widely distributed across Eurasia, particularly thriving in the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, and China.
