General Description
Schistura robertsi is a species within the Nemacheilidae family and belongs to the Cypriniformes order. This loach species features specific physical characteristics including the presence of processus dentiformis and dark body bars wider than the pale interspaces in adults. With a maximum size of approximately 5.6cm, it is distinguishable from congeneric species by various morphological differences. The genus Schistura is the most species-rich among nemacheilid loaches, with over 190 described members, exhibiting diverse color patterns and body structures.
Aquarium Setup
The ideal tank setup for Schistura robertsi should mimic a flowing stream or river, containing rocks, sand, fine gravel, and water-worn boulders. Decorate the tank with driftwood branches to create hiding spots and broken lines of sight. While most aquatic plants may not thrive, hardy species like Microsorum, Bolbitis, or Anubias can be incorporated. Maintain high dissolved oxygen levels and some water movement using power filters, powerheads, or airstones. Regular water changes of 30-50% tank volume are necessary to prevent organic pollutant accumulation.
Behaviour
Although not highly aggressive, Schistura robertsi is not suitable for general community aquariums due to its specialized requirements. Careful selection of tankmates, such as species that inhabit similar biotopes, is essential. Placid bottom-dwellers and slow-moving fish should be avoided as they may become targets for territorial Schistura. Keeping Schistura robertsi with similarly-shaped relatives or in small groups with adequate hiding spaces can help reduce conspecific aggression.
Feeding and Diet
Schistura species are omnivorous, primarily consuming small insects, worms, crustaceans, and zooplankton in the wild. In aquariums, they accept dried foods but should be supplemented with small live or frozen foods like Daphnia, Artemia, and bloodworms for optimal coloration and health.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Information regarding the reproduction of Schistura robertsi is currently unrecorded. While sexual dimorphism is unknown, mature females are expected to appear rounder-shaped, particularly when gravid.
Habitat and Distribution
Inhabiting shallow branches of streams with substrates of sand, gravel, and stones, Schistura robertsi is found on the western slope of the Malay Peninsula, stretching from Myanmar to southern Thailand. It has also been observed on Phuket Thailand and Langkawi in Malaysia. The species thrives in ecosystems with transparent water and diverse fish species such as Rasbora and Mastacembelus.
