General Description

Schistura schultzi, also known as Noemacheilus schultzi or Nemacheilus schultzi, is a species within the family Nemacheilidae. This loach species can grow up to 9.3 cm in length. The etymology of the genus name "Schistura" comes from the Greek words meaning "to divide" in reference to the caudal-fin shape of many species. With distinct features such as a moderately arched mouth and a diverse dark color pattern, these fish are part of a genus that continues to grow, with over 100 species described since 1990.

Aquarium Setup

To maintain Schistura schultzi in captivity, it is essential to recreate a habitat that resembles a flowing stream or river within a tank size of at least 160 liters. The tank should have a substrate of variably-sized rocks, sand, fine gravel, and water-worn boulders. Providing driftwood branches can create hiding spots and broken lines of sight. While most aquatic plants may struggle, hardy varieties like Microsorum, Bolbitis, or Anubias spp. can be attached to the decor. The fish require well-oxygenated water and some water movement, achieved through power filters, powerheads, or airstones. Regular water changes of 30-50% of the tank volume are recommended to maintain pristine water quality.

Behaviour

Although specific aquarium behavior is not well-documented, Schistura schultzi appears to be a robust species. It is advised not to house them with slow-moving, long-finned, or very placid tankmates to avoid potential conflicts.

Feeding and Diet

In their natural habitat, Schistura schultzi are omnivorous, consuming small insects, worms, crustaceans, and zooplankton. In an aquarium setting, they accept dried foods but should be provided with a varied diet that includes small live and frozen foods like Daphnia, Artemia, and bloodworms to maintain optimal coloration and condition.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Details on the reproduction of Schistura schultzi are currently unavailable. Although sexual dimorphism specifics are unknown, sexually-mature females may appear rounder-shaped than males, particularly when gravid.

Habitat and Distribution

Nemacheilus schultzi is likely found in shallow, narrow branches of streams with substrates consisting of sand, gravel, or stones and flowing, well-oxygenated water. Its distribution includes the Mekong watershed in northern Thailand and possibly extends to Laos.
