General Description
The Schistura Sp. 6, a member of the Nemacheilidae family, was collected for the aquarium trade in 2012. Its body becomes suffused with red pigmentation once settled, resembling the Schistura multifasciata species group. Schistura is a diverse genus with over 190 members, with some species exhibiting unique traits such as reduced body size and altered fin structures. These fish are adapted to flowing streams and high-oxygen environments.
Aquarium Setup
To maintain Schistura Sp. 6, it is recommended to simulate a flowing stream or river in a tank with rocks, sand, gravel, and driftwood. Hardy aquatic plants like Microsorum, Bolbitis, or Anubias can be added. Adequate oxygen levels and water movement are crucial, requiring power filters, powerheads, or airstones. Regular water changes of 30-50% tank volume are necessary.
Behaviour
Schistura Sp. 6 is likely intolerant of organic pollutants and thrives in clean, well-oxygenated water. These fish prefer shaded spots and broken lines of sight created by driftwood and rocks. They may exhibit territorial behavior in the aquarium, especially when breeding or establishing their space within the habitat.
Feeding and Diet
In the wild, Schistura Sp. 6 feeds on small insects, worms, crustaceans, and zooplankton. In the aquarium, they accept dried foods but should be supplemented with live or frozen fare like Daphnia, Artemia, and bloodworms. A varied diet enhances their coloration and overall condition.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Clear sexual dimorphism may be observed in some Schistura species. Reproduction in captivity can be triggered by providing suitable breeding conditions, such as optimal water parameters, hiding spots, and a balanced diet. Males may exhibit more intense coloration or different markings during the breeding season.
Habitat and Distribution
Schistura Sp. 6 originates from the south Garo Hills in Meghalaya state, northeastern India. These fish are part of the Garo-Khasi mountain range and thrive in diverse habitats ranging from flowing streams to cave systems. The Nemacheilidae family, to which they belong, is widely distributed across Eurasia, with high species diversity in regions like the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, and China.
