General Description

Like other members of the family Notopteridae, the Papyrocranus Afer, commonly known as Arowana Knifefish, Reticulate Knifefish, or Marbled Knifefish, features fused anal and caudal fins forming a single, undulating fin along its underside. This species, with only one other known species in its genus, can develop captivating patterns as adults, but their potential size and aggressive nature make them more suitable for experienced fishkeepers.

Aquarium Setup

The Papyrocranus Afer thrives in a dimly lit aquarium with dense planting, driftwood pieces, and twisted roots for hiding places. Minimal water movement is ideal, with specific water conditions of 5-15°dH in hardness, a pH range of 6.5-7.5, and temperatures between 24-28°C. The minimum tank size recommended for this species is 1700 litres.

Behaviour

This species exhibits aggressive behavior and should only be housed with robust fish species. Initially tolerant in groups, as they mature, Arowana Knifefish become territorial, particularly towards other knifefish and any fish they dislike. While some reports suggest peaceful cohabitation with large fish like arowana, instances of aggression towards the same species in other tanks are also documented. It is advised to keep them as solitary individuals or alongside large loricariids such as Acanthicus adonis.

Feeding and Diet

Primarily carnivorous, the Arowana Knifefish accepts a variety of meaty live and frozen foods. Some individuals may also consume pelleted diets. A well-rounded diet for this species includes lance fish, prawns, chopped mussels, earthworms, and carnivore pellets.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

There are no reported instances of reproduction in captivity for the Papyrocranus Afer. Sexual dimorphism for this species remains unknown.

Habitat and Distribution

In the wild, the Arowana Knifefish is commonly found in heavily vegetated, slow-moving river areas and stagnant backwaters. They are widely distributed across western and central Africa, recorded in countries such as Sudan, Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, and Senegal, among others, inhabiting various river systems like the Niger, Cross, Sanaga, Tano, and Prah.
