General Description

Betta Channoides, also known as the Snakehead Betta, is a member of the Betta albimarginata group, characterized by unique color patterns and possessing 9-12 anal-fin spines. They closely resemble each other but can be differentiated by various physical characteristics such as anal fin spines, lateral scale rows, and dorsal fin coloration. These labyrinth fish have adapted to diverse environments, from stagnant ditches to acidic peat swamp forests, and are known for their labyrinth organ, allowing them to breathe atmospheric air to some extent.

Aquarium Setup

For Betta Channoides, a 40-liter tank is recommended, decorated with driftwood, roots, and branches to create shaded areas and shelter. Adding dried leaf litter not only enhances the habitat's natural feel but also serves as a food source for microbe colonies, beneficial for the fish. Maintaining dim lighting and including aquatic plant species like Microsorum and Taxiphyllum is ideal. Soft water with acidic conditions, achieved through methods like reverse osmosis and the use of phosphoric acid, is essential. Gentle filtration with an air-powered sponge filter and ensuring access to humid air above the water surface are vital considerations for their habitat.

Behaviour

Betta Channoides is best kept alone or with small, peaceful species due to its requirements and disposition. In a group setting, they display interesting behavioral interactions, while larger or more vigorous fish may intimidate or outcompete them. Some small cyprinids and loaches from similar natural environments can be compatible, but thorough research is necessary to maintain harmony in the tank.

Feeding and Diet

In their natural habitat, Betta Channoides feed on insects, small invertebrates, and zooplankton. Captive individuals readily accept dried food but should be regularly offered live or frozen foods like Daphnia, Artemia, or bloodworms for optimal health. Care should be taken not to overfeed, as this species is prone to obesity.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Betty Channoides is a paternal mouthbrooder, requiring a separate breeding tank for successful reproduction. Following a courtship process, the male embraces the female to release eggs and milt. Fertilized eggs are carried by the male until transferred to the female's mouth. After an incubation period of 10-21 days, the male releases the fry, which can immediately consume small live foods. Adult males exhibit more vibrant colors and broader head shapes compared to females.

Habitat and Distribution

Native to the Mahakam river basin in Kalimantan Timur, Indonesia, Betta Channoides is found in shallow forest streams with brownish, acidic water. They are commonly collected among leaf litter and plant roots in these habitats. Populations from different localities are often labeled to preserve genetic purity and accurate bloodlines.
