General Description

Betta Chloropharynx is part of the Betta waseri group within the Betta genus, characterized by a yellow body coloration, iridescent gold opercle scales in mature males, and striking black throat markings. These labyrinth fish possess an accessory breathing organ allowing them to breathe atmospheric air. With almost 70 recognized species in the Betta genus, these fish have diversified to thrive in various habitats, including peat swamps and acidic peat swamp forests.

Aquarium Setup

The Green Throat Mouthbrooder can be housed in a fully decorated aquarium with driftwood, roots, branches, and clay pots for shelter. Dried leaf litter like beech or oak leaves can be added to mimic the natural environment, providing cover and promoting microbe colonies for additional food sources. Dim lighting, aquatic plants like Microsorum pteropus and Taxiphyllum barbieri, and floating vegetation are recommended. A gentle air-powered sponge filter and a tightly covered tank with some airspace above the water surface are essential.

Behaviour

Best kept alone or with peaceful species due to its requirements and gentle disposition, it can be housed in pairs or groups. They exhibit interesting behavioral interactions when maintained in a group setting, displaying unique social dynamics.

Feeding and Diet

In the wild, Betta Chloropharynx feeds on insects and small invertebrates. In captivity, they accept dried foods but thrive on small live or frozen options like Daphnia, Artemia, and bloodworms. Offering a varied diet is essential for optimal color and condition, ensuring not to overfeed as these Bettas are prone to obesity.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Green Throat Mouthbrooders are paternal mouthbrooders. Breeding requires a separate tank with a tight-fitting cover to maintain warm, humid air for fry development. Males embrace females for spawning, with the male carrying and hatching the eggs in his mouth. Fully formed fry are released after an incubation period of 10-21 days. Adult males are more colorful, have extended fins, and a broader head compared to females.

Habitat and Distribution

Found in peat swamps and blackwater streams, Betta Chloropharynx originates from Bangka and Palembang in Indonesia. Inhabiting areas with minimal light penetration, darkly stained water, and a pH as low as 3.0-4.0, they coexist with decaying organic material and submerged vegetation in their natural habitat.
