Behaviour

The Betta Gladiator is not recommended for standard community set-ups due to its specific requirements and disposition, making it best kept alone or with very peaceful species. Larger or more vigorous fishes are likely to intimidate and outcompete it; however, small cyprinids and loaches that inhabit similar environments may be compatible. Maintaining them in pairs is ideal, with males known to fight incessantly when housed together, sometimes resulting in fatal outcomes in confined spaces.

Feeding and Diet

In their natural habitat, Betta Gladiators prey on insects, small invertebrates, and zooplankton, including shrimp. In aquariums, they usually accept dried foods once acquainted but should be regularly offered small live or frozen foods like Daphnia, Artemia, or bloodworms for optimal color and condition development. Occasional earthworms can be given to larger specimens, but overfeeding should be avoided as they are prone to obesity.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Betta Gladiators are paternal mouthbrooders, requiring a separate breeding tank with a tight-fitting cover for breeding. Pair formation is crucial, as randomly selected males and females may not coexist peacefully, leading to potential aggression and harm. During courtship, the male displays intense colors and approaches the female with specific behaviors. The mating process involves several steps, including egg fertilization and collection, with the male carrying the eggs in his mouth. Successful breeding requires a peaceful environment and careful attention post-spawning to protect the male from disturbances.

Habitat and Distribution

Endemic to the Maliau Basin in Sabah state, Borneo, Betta Gladiators inhabit acidic waters with a pH of 4.2-4.8. They are often found in heath forests alongside other species like 'Puntius' sealei and Hemibagrus cf. baramensis, with adults spaced about a meter apart in nature.

Aquarium Setup

For Betta Gladiator aquarium setup, a substrate is optional, but driftwood roots, branches, clay pots, and leaf litter can be used for decorations and shelter. Dim lighting is preferred, and Asian plant species like Microsorum pteropus and Cryptocoryne spp. are suitable. A gentle air-powered sponge filter and a partial tank cover are recommended to provide access to the layer of warm, humid air above the water surface, which is crucial for their well-being.
