General Description

The Betta Hipposideros, a member of the Betta waseri group/complex, is a species included within the genus Betta. Adult males of this species exhibit a rich base body color of clay yellow, with iridescent gold scales on the opercle. Throat markings that join with the black lower jaw help distinguish the Betta Hipposideros from its counterparts. With almost 70 recognized members in the Betta genus, Betta Hipposideros is part of the most speciose group within the family Osphronemidae. As with other fish in the suborder Anabantoidei, this species possesses a labyrinth organ, allowing it to breathe atmospheric air.

Aquarium Setup

For an optimal tank setup, a 96-litre tank is recommended, keeping in mind the species' requirements. Decorate the aquarium with driftwood, roots, and branches to create shady spots. Dried leaf litter, such as beech or oak leaves, can provide additional cover and promote the growth of microbe colonies beneficial to the fish. Dim lighting is preferred, with the addition of aquatic plants like Microsorum pteropus or Taxiphyllum barbieri. Maintain gentle filtration with an air-powered sponge filter and ensure the tank is well-covered, leaving space for access to a layer of humid air above the water surface.

Behaviour

Betta Hipposideros is best kept alone or with very peaceful species due to its disposition. It can be housed in pairs or groups, displaying interesting behavioral interactions when in a group setting. Larger or more vigorous fish may intimidate or outcompete this species, making it essential to choose tankmates carefully. Small cyprinids and loaches that inhabit similar environments are usually compatible companions.

Feeding and Diet

In the wild, Betta Hipposideros likely preys on insects and small invertebrates. In captivity, they accept dried food but should be regularly offered live or frozen foods like Daphnia, Artemia, or bloodworms to maintain optimal color and condition. Small insects such as crickets or Drosophila fruit flies can also be fed after filling their stomachs with fish flakes or vegetables. Care should be taken not to overfeed, as Betta spp. are prone to obesity.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Betta Hipposideros is a paternal mouthbrooder, requiring a separate breeding tank for successful reproduction. After a complex courtship ritual, eggs and milt are released during an embrace. Fertilized eggs are caught and carried by the male before hatching. The incubation period ranges from 10 to 21 days, after which the male releases free-swimming fry. Adult males display more vibrant colors, extended fins, and a broader head shape compared to females.

Habitat and Distribution

This species is native to peat swamps and blackwater streams, with a specific habitat consisting of stagnant waters rich in organic material. Betta Hipposideros is found in regions from western Peninsular Malaysia to eastern Sumatra, Indonesia. These ancient biotopes are characterized by low pH levels, minimal dissolved minerals, and darkly stained water. The fish coexist with other osphronemids in environments with thick vegetation and submerged tree roots.
