Behaviour

The Betta Ibanorum is not recommended for standard community set-ups due to its specific requirements and disposition, making it best kept alone or with very peaceful species to avoid intimidation and competition. While some small cyprinids and loaches can coexist, it is generally recommended to maintain this species alone. When kept in pairs or groups, interesting behavioral interactions can be observed.

Feeding and Diet

In nature, the Betta Ibanorum primarily feeds on insects and small invertebrates. Captive individuals readily accept dried foods but should also be offered live or frozen options like Daphnia, Artemia, or bloodworms regularly to maintain optimal color and condition. Overfeeding should be avoided as Betta species are prone to obesity.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

The Betta Ibanorum is a paternal mouthbrooder, requiring a separate breeding tank with a tight-fitting cover to ensure proper development of the fry's labyrinth organ. During courtship, the female takes an active role, and mating involves the male wrapping around the female for egg release. The incubation period lasts 14-21 days, after which the male releases free-swimming fry. Males are larger with more extended fins and broader head shapes compared to females.

Habitat and Distribution

Native to the Malaysian state of Sarawak on Borneo, the Betta Ibanorum is widely distributed throughout the south and west of the state. It adapts to various environments but typically inhabits blackwater habitats in ancient peat swamps or clear streams with flowing water. The species is commonly found in shaded areas with abundant riparian vegetation, characterized by low pH levels and minimal dissolved mineral content.

Aquarium Setup

For optimal care, the Betta Ibanorum species can be housed in a fully decorated aquarium without substrate, utilizing driftwood, branches, and clay pots for shelter. Dried leaf litter can be added to mimic natural habitats and provide microbe colonies for supplemental fry food. The species thrives under dim lighting and prefers acidic water conditions with soft water. Gentle filtration and access to humid air above the water surface are crucial considerations for a successful tank setup.
