General Description

Betta Kuehnei, a member of the Betta genus, is part of the B. pugnax complex of closely-related species. These fish typically have a large head, brown coloration with iridescent spots, and distinctive features for differentiation.

Aquarium Setup

The ideal tank setup for Betta Kuehnei includes decorations like driftwood, roots, and branches to create shaded areas. The addition of dried leaf litter, such as beech or oak leaves, is beneficial for creating a natural environment. Dim lighting, aquatic plants like Microsorum pteropus, and a gentle air-powered sponge filter are recommended. Tanks should not be filled to the top to allow occasional access to a layer of humid air above the water surface.

Behaviour

Betta Kuehnei is best kept alone or with peaceful species due to their disposition, as larger or more active tankmates may intimidate them. They can be kept in pairs or groups, showcasing interesting interactions in group settings. Compatibility exists with small cyprinids and loaches that share similar habitats.

Feeding and Diet

In the wild, Betta Kuehnei feeds on insects and small invertebrates. In captivity, they accept dried foods but require regular feeding of live or frozen foods such as Daphnia, Artemia, or bloodworms. Small insects like crickets or fruit flies should be fed a varied diet before offering them to the fish to prevent overfeeding and potential obesity.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Betta Kuehnei is a paternal mouthbrooder, with a unique breeding process that involves the male carrying and hatching the eggs. The male displays more extended fins, iridescent scaling on the head, and a broader head shape compared to the female. Breeding tanks should have a secure cover, ensuring proper development of the labyrinth organ in the fry.

Habitat and Distribution

Originating from forest streams in Peninsular Malaysia and Thailand, Betta Kuehnei thrives in clear, transparent waters with specific pH, hardness, and temperature requirements. They are found in areas with macrophytes and leaf litter, coexisting with species like Trichopsis vittata and Parosphromenus paludicola.
