General Description

Betta Lehi is part of the B. pugnax complex within the Betta genus, characterized by specific physical traits like a relatively large head, brown live coloration with iridescent spots, and distinct features in males, females, and juveniles. This species, like others in the genus, showcases adaptation to various environments from stagnant ditches to acidic peat swamp forests, possessing a labyrinth organ for breathing air.

Aquarium Setup

The ideal tank setup for Betta Lehi involves creating a fully-decorated environment with driftwood, roots, branches, and clay pots for shelter. Adding dried leaf litter, such as beech or oak leaves, can enhance the natural feel and provide cover for the fish. Dim lighting and aquatic plants like Microsorum pteropus and Cryptocoryne spp. create a suitable habitat. A gentle, air-powered sponge filter and a partially covered tank to allow access to humid air above the water surface are recommended.

Behaviour

Betta Lehi is not suited for standard community setups due to its requirements and disposition. It is best kept alone or with very peaceful species to prevent intimidation or competition. In pairs or groups, this species exhibits interesting behavioral interactions, making tank compatibility with small cyprinids and loaches possible.

Feeding and Diet

In the wild, Betta Lehi feeds on insects and small invertebrates, accepting dried food in captivity. However, offering live or frozen foods like Daphnia, Artemia, or bloodworms is crucial for optimal color and condition development. Care should be taken not to overfeed, as Betta spp. are prone to obesity, with small insects like crickets or fruit flies being suitable additions to their diet.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

As a paternal mouthbrooder, Betta Lehi requires a separate breeding tank with a tight-fitting cover. After a courtship period, the male embraces the female to release eggs and milt. Fertilized eggs are caught by the male before being mouthed by the female and placed in the male's mouth. The incubation period is 7-12 days, after which the male releases free-swimming fry. Males are larger than females and exhibit more iridescent scaling, broader head shape, and extended fins.

Habitat and Distribution

Endemic to Borneo, Betta Lehi inhabits forest peat swamps, acidic streams, and swampy areas with minimal light penetration. Typically found in water with low mineral content, pH between 3.0-5.5, and dark brown coloring from organic material decay, this species thrives in environments with fallen leaves, branches, and submerged roots. Its distribution spans from Lundu to Bau in Sarawak, Malaysia, and the River Kapuas basin in Kalimantan Barat, Indonesia.
