Behaviour:

The Betta Midas is not recommended for standard community setups due to its requirements and disposition; it is best kept alone or with very peaceful species to avoid intimidation and competition. It can coexist with small cyprinids and loaches from similar environments but careful research is advised before introduction. When kept in a pair or group, this species displays interesting behavioral interactions.

Feeding and Diet:

In nature, the Betta Midas feeds mainly on insects and small invertebrates. In captivity, they readily accept dried foods but should be regularly offered live or frozen options such as Daphnia, Artemia, or bloodworms to maintain optimal coloration and condition. Small insects like crickets or fruit flies can also be fed after filling their stomachs with fish flakes or vegetable matter. Care should be taken not to overfeed as Bettas are prone to obesity.

Reproduction & Dimorphism:

Adult male Betta Midas exhibit a stronger color pattern, develop more extended fins, and have a broader head shape compared to females. Reproduction can occur in pairs or groups, with males building bubble nests for spawning.

Habitat and Distribution:

The Betta Midas is found in the lower Kapuas river basin in West Kalimantan province, Indonesian Borneo. It may also inhabit the Sambas river drainage and western Sarawak in Malaysia. Typically found in blackwater rivers flowing through peat swamp forests with acidic water conditions, this species coexists with various other fish species in its natural habitat.

Aquarium Setup:

When setting up an aquarium for Betta Midas, it is advisable to avoid using a substrate for easier maintenance. Decorate the tank with driftwood, roots, branches, clay pots, and leaf litter to provide shelter and mimic its natural environment. Soft, acidic water with minimal hardness is essential, achieved through methods like reverse osmosis and acidification. Gentle filtration and dim lighting are preferred, along with the addition of aquatic plants and floating vegetation. Maintaining a partially covered tank allows the fish access to the layer of humid air above the water surface.
