General Description
Betta Ocellata is part of the Betta unimaculata complex and shares similarities with other species in the group, characterized by a long, slender body, large blunt head, and rounded caudal fin. This species stands out with its conical head, specific fin rays count, lateral scales number, and proportions of fin bases and head width.

Aquarium Setup
The species can thrive in a fully decorated tank or without substrate, with driftwood, roots, and branches to create shaded areas. Adding dried leaf litter, clay pots, or piping for shelter will mimic their natural habitat. Dim lighting, Asian plant species like Microsorum pteropus, and gentle filtration from an air-powered sponge filter are suitable.

Behaviour
Betta Ocellata is best kept alone or with peaceful species due to its requirements and gentle nature. In a pair, they are ideal for breeding, but they can be housed in groups in spacious tanks. Aggression is rare except in confined spaces.

Feeding and Diet
In the wild, Betta Ocellata preys on insects and small invertebrates. Captive fish can be fed dried foods once acclimated, but a diet rich in live or frozen foods like Daphnia, Artemia, or bloodworms is essential. Care should be taken not to overfeed, especially with large specimens.

Reproduction & Dimorphism
Males of Betta Ocellata grow larger and display vibrant colors, broader heads, and elongated fins compared to females. They are paternal mouthbrooders, requiring a separate breeding tank with a tight cover for fry development. Pair bonding is crucial for successful breeding, and males care for fertilized eggs in their mouths until hatching.

Habitat and Distribution
Native to Sabah in Borneo and Kalimantan Timur in Indonesia, Betta Ocellata inhabit a range of habitats, from clear flowing streams to stagnant pools and forested streams. They are found alongside various sympatric species, adapting to different water conditions and displaying varied coloration based on their environment.
