General Description
Betta Pallida, previously known as Betta sp. 'southern Thailand,' belongs to the Betta picta group. Typically, these fish have rounded unpaired fins, distinctive anal and caudal fin markings, and colorful iridescent scales. Like other members of the genus Betta, they possess a labyrinth organ, which enables them to breathe atmospheric air to some extent.
Aquarium Setup
When setting up an aquarium for Betta Pallida, it is advisable to include decor like driftwood, roots, and branches to create sheltered spots. Dried leaf litter, such as beech or oak leaves, can be added to provide cover and promote the growth of microbe colonies. This species thrives in dim lighting conditions and benefits from the presence of Asian plant species. A gentle air-powered sponge filter and a partially filled tank with a tight-fitting cover are also recommended.
Behaviour
Betts Pallida is best kept either alone or with very peaceful tankmates. They can be housed in pairs or groups, displaying interesting behavioral interactions in a group setting. Care should be taken to avoid housing them with larger or more aggressive species, as Betts Pallida may be intimidated or outcompeted.
Feeding and Diet
In the wild, Betts Pallida feeds on insects and small invertebrates. In captivity, they readily accept dried foods but should also be offered live or frozen options such as Daphnia, Artemia, and bloodworms. Care should be taken not to overfeed, as this species is prone to obesity.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Betts Pallida is a paternal mouthbrooder, requiring a separate breeding tank. After a courtship ritual, the male embraces the female, releasing eggs for fertilization. The male then collects the eggs in his mouth for incubation. Once hatched, the fry can be fed microworms and Artemia nauplii. Male Betts Pallida grow larger and display more iridescent scaling than females.
Habitat and Distribution
Found in Narathiwat province, southern Thailand, Betts Pallida inhabits slow-moving creeks with clear, slightly stained water and leaf litter substrate. They thrive in water with a pH range of 5.5-7.0, temperatures between 22-27°C, and a hardness of 0-90ppm.
