General Description

Betta Pallifina, part of the Betta unimaculata complex, is a slender-bodied labyrinth fish with unique features distinguishing it from other members of the group. These include a lanceolate caudal fin, an orange subdistal band in the anal fin of females, and a specific range of body proportions. Belonging to the family Osphronemidae, this species boasts adaptation to various habitats, displaying a maze-like labyrinth organ for breathing atmospheric air.

Aquarium Setup

In the aquarium, Betta Pallifina thrives in a fully decorated tank, with driftwood, roots, and branches creating shaded areas. Dried leaf litter, plant pots, or piping can offer additional shelter and enhance the natural ambiance. Dim lighting is preferred, with suitable aquatic plant species like Microsorum pteropus and Taxiphyllum barbieri. A gentle air-powered sponge filter is sufficient for filtration, and the tank must be well-covered to prevent jumping.

Behaviour

This species is best kept alone or with very peaceful tankmates to prevent intimidation or competition. It can be housed in pairs for breeding purposes, while larger groups require a spacious aquarium. Courtship rituals involve colorful displays by the male, with a protracted mating process typical of osphronemids. Post-spawning, males should be given peace and quiet to avoid potential egg consumption.

Feeding and Diet

Naturally, *Betta Pallifina preys on insects and small invertebrates, readily accepting dried foods in captivity. However, a diet enriched with live or frozen options like Daphnia and Artemia ensures optimal color and condition. Care must be taken not to overfeed, especially with occasional earthworm treats due to the species' susceptibility to obesity.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

As a paternal mouthbrooder, Betta Pallifina requires a separate breeding tank with a tight-fitting cover to facilitate fry development. A compatible pair is crucial for successful breeding, with males displaying aggression only in confined spaces. Sexual dimorphism is evident, with males growing larger, having more iridescent scales, broader head shapes, and extended fins compared to females.

Habitat and Distribution

Native to the upper Barito river basin in Kalimantan Tengah, Borneo, Betta Pallifina inhabits forested streams with clear, flowing water and dense plant growth. The species thrives in mildly acidic waters with pH levels ranging between 6.6-7.4, showcasing adaptation to diverse ecological niches within its natural habitat.
