General Description

Betta Pardalotos is a species belonging to the Betta waseri group, characterized by a clay yellow base body coloration and iridescent gold opercle scales in mature males. This labyrinth fish, like others in the suborder Anabantoidei, possesses an accessory breathing organ allowing it to breathe atmospheric air to some extent. It is one of almost 70 recognized members in the genus Betta and has successfully adapted to various ecological niches.

Aquarium Setup

The recommended tank setup for Betta Pardalotos includes driftwood, roots, and branches to create shady spots, with substrates like clay plant pots or lengths of piping for shelter. Addition of dried leaf litter like beech or oak leaves further enhances the natural feel, providing cover and a secondary food source for fry. Dim lighting, Asian plant species, and floating vegetation are beneficial, with gentle filtration and access to a layer of humid air above the water surface.

Behaviour

Betts Pardalotos is best kept alone or with very peaceful species due to its disposition, as larger or more vigorous fishes may intimidate or outcompete it. It can be maintained in pairs or groups, displaying interesting behavioural interactions under group circumstances. Small cyprinids and loaches from similar environments in nature are compatible tank mates.

Feeding and Diet

In its natural habitat, Betta Pardalotos likely preys on insects and small invertebrates. Captive individuals accept dried products but should be regularly offered small live or frozen foods like Daphnia, Artemia, or bloodworms to maintain optimal color and condition. Small insects such as crickets or Drosophila fruit flies, filled with fish flakes or vegetable matter, are suitable. Care should be taken to avoid overfeeding due to the species' susceptibility to obesity.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Betts Pardalotos is a paternal mouthbrooder, requiring a separate breeding tank with a tight-fitting cover to ensure access to warm, humid air for fry development. Following a courtship where eggs and milt are released, fertilized eggs are caught on the male's anal fin, picked up by the female, and then spat out for the male to catch. Adult males grow larger, develop extended fins, and possess a broader head shape compared to females.

Habitat and Distribution

The species originates from the Galem River in Sumatra, Indonesia, possibly endemic to the lower Musi basin. Found in small freshwater channels draining into the lower Musi River, it shares its habitat with species such as Belontia hasseltii, Betta edithae, Luciocephalus pulcher, and Trichopodus trichopterus.
