General Description

Betta Patoti is part of the Betta unimaculata complex within the genus Betta, characterized by a slender body, large blunt head, and unique dark vertical bars on its lower body. As a member of the Anabantoidei suborder, it possesses a labyrinth organ that allows it to breathe atmospheric air to some extent. This species is part of the Osphronemidae family and can reach up to 10.0cm in size.

Aquarium Setup

The ideal tank setup for Betta Patoti includes driftwood, roots, and branches to create shaded areas. Substrate-free tanks are preferred by many breeders. Adding dried leaf litter, like beech or oak leaves, can enhance the natural environment and stimulate microbe growth. Soft, dim lighting is recommended, along with Asian plant species that thrive in low light conditions. A gentle air-powered sponge filter is sufficient for filtration.

Behaviour

Betta Patoti is not suited for standard community setups due to its specific requirements. It is best kept alone or with very peaceful species to avoid intimidation. Maintaining a pair is recommended for breeding, but a group can be housed in a spacious aquarium. The mating process involves courtship displays by the male, followed by the female releasing eggs for the male to fertilize and care for as a paternal mouthbrooder.

Feeding and Diet

In the wild, Betta Patoti feeds on insects and small invertebrates. In captivity, they accept dried foods but should be supplemented with live or frozen options like Daphnia, Artemia, and bloodworms. Overfeeding should be avoided as these fish are prone to obesity, especially larger specimens who may occasionally be offered earthworms.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Males of Betta Patoti grow larger, display brighter colors, have a broader head shape, and develop more extended fins compared to females. During reproduction, a compatible pair should be selected to avoid aggression. The male cares for the fertilized eggs in his mouth, releasing fully-formed fry after an incubation period of 12-17 days. Fry can be fed with microworms and Artemia nauplii.

Habitat and Distribution

This species is native to the Mangar River in Indonesian Borneo, with variations in color patterns depending on the collection locality. The habitat ranges from stagnant ditches to hill streams, showing adaptability to various environments. Betta Patoti thrives in water temperatures between 21-27°C, with a pH range of 4.0-7.0 and water hardness of 0-179ppm.
