General Description

Betta Pi, a member of the Betta waseri group, is characterized by its clay yellow base body coloration, distinct throat markings resembling the Greek letter "π" (pi), and several unique physical traits such as a dark throat marking, no transverse bars on its dorsal and caudal fins, and a thick blue band on the anal fin of both sexes. Belonging to the most speciose genus within the family Osphronemidae, Betta species have adapted to diverse habitats, with this particular species possessing a labyrinth organ for obtaining atmospheric oxygen.

Aquarium Setup

For a Betta Pi aquarium, it is recommended to provide driftwood, roots, and branches for shelter, with dried leaf litter for cover and microbe colonization. Dim lighting is preferable, along with aquatic plants like Microsorum and Cryptocoryne species, and floating vegetation. Soft, acidic water with minimal hardness is necessary, facilitated by a gentle air-powered sponge filter and a partially covered tank to allow access to humid air above the water surface.

Behaviour

Betta Pi is best kept alone or with very peaceful companions, such as small cyprinids and loaches. While not overly aggressive, care should be taken in selecting tank mates, as Betta Pi may exhibit territorial behavior, especially during breeding. Males may display more aggression towards each other than females, but pairs or groups can be maintained in suitable conditions.

Feeding and Diet

In the wild, Betta Pi primarily preys on aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates. In captivity, they readily accept dried foods but should be supplemented with live or frozen options like Daphnia, Artemia, or chironomid larvae. Overfeeding should be avoided, as Betta species are prone to obesity.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Betta Pi is a paternal mouthbrooder, requiring a separate breeding setup. After a courtship period, spawning involves the male fertilizing and mouthbrooding the eggs, which hatch into free-swimming fry. Adult males are larger with extended fins and broader head shapes compared to females.

Habitat and Distribution

Found in the Pru Toe-Daeng peat swamps of southern Thailand and parts of northern Peninsular Malaysia, Betta Pi inhabits freshwater and blackwater streams in densely vegetated areas. These environments are characterized by dark, acidic waters with minimal dissolved mineral content, often impacted by human activities like deforestation for commercial purposes.
