Behaviour

The Spotted Betta is not recommended for a standard community aquarium due to its care requirements and disposition. It is best kept alone or with very peaceful species, with small cyprinids and loaches that inhabit similar environments being suitable. Despite not being among the most aggressive members of the genus, it can be maintained in a pair or group, but proper research prior to purchase is essential for compatibility.

Feeding and Diet

The Spotted Betta is likely to prey on aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates in nature. Captive fish usually accept dried products but should be regularly offered small live or frozen foods like Daphnia, Artemia, or chironomid larvae to maintain optimal color and condition. Care should be taken to avoid overfeeding as Betta species are prone to obesity.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

The Spotted Betta is a paternal mouthbrooder. It is advisable to set up a separate breeding aquarium with a tight-fitting cover to ensure the development of the labyrinth organ in the fry. After a courtship ritual, fertilized eggs are kept in the male's mouth until they hatch, after which he releases the free-swimming fry. Mature males exhibit more color and iridescence compared to females.

Habitat and Distribution

Usually found in clear, flowing hill streams and quiet marginal zones with leaf litter and rocks, the Spotted Betta can also be found in roadside ditches and artificial structures like water tanks. Endemic to the island of Java, Indonesia, specifically western and central areas, this species' distribution is limited.
