General Description

Betta pinguis is a species included in the Betta akarensis group, characterized by pre-orbital and post-orbital stripes, a stocky body with dense opercle pigmentation, and dorsal-fin origin above lateral scales. Belonging to the family Osphronemidae, this species, like others in the suborder Anabantoidei, possesses a labyrinth organ for atmospheric air breathing. With almost 70 recognized members, the genus Betta thrives in various ecological niches, displaying diversity in adaptation.

Aquarium Setup

The recommended setup includes a fully-decorated aquarium with driftwood, roots, branches, and dried leaf litter for natural cover and microbe colonies. Aquatic plants like Microsorum and Cryptocoryne spp. thrive under dim lighting and acidic, soft water conditions. An air-powered sponge filter and gentle water circulation are ideal for the species' habitat requirements, with occasional access to a layer of humid air above the water surface.

Behaviour

Betta pinguis is best kept alone or with peaceful species to avoid intimidation and competition. It exhibits interesting behavioral interactions in pairs or groups. Compatibility with small cyprinids and loaches requires thorough research due to its specific requirements and disposition.

Feeding and Diet

In nature, B. pinguis feeds on insects and small invertebrates. Captive individuals accept dried foods but should be supplemented with live or frozen options like Daphnia and bloodworms. Care should be taken to prevent overfeeding, as these fish are prone to obesity. Small insects such as crickets or fruit flies are suitable after being fed properly.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

The species is a paternal mouthbrooder, requiring a separate breeding tank with a tight-fitting cover to maintain warm, humid conditions for proper fry development. Sexual dimorphism is evident, with males growing larger and showcasing more iridescent coloration in fins, and a broader head shape compared to females. The female plays an active role in courtship and spawning.

Habitat and Distribution

Found in the middle and upper Kapuas watershed in Kalimantan Barat, Indonesia, Betta pinguis inhabits streams with tannin-stained water and marginal vegetation. It shares its habitat with sympatric species like B. dimidiata and B. enisae.
