General Description

The Betta Prima, often confused with Betta pugnax or B. taeniata, belongs to the B. pugnax complex within the Betta genus. It displays specific physical characteristics such as a relatively large head, brown coloration with green or blue iridescent spots, and a lanceolate caudal fin. This labyrinth fish possesses an accessory breathing organ allowing it to breathe atmospheric air. The species is part of the family Osphronemidae and is commonly found in Southeast Asia.

Aquarium Setup

Betta Prima thrives in a fully-decorated aquarium with driftwood, roots, and branches to create shaded areas. Substrate is optional for ease of maintenance, and the addition of dried leaf litter is beneficial. Dim lighting is preferred, and the tank should have gentle filtration provided by an air-powered sponge filter. It is crucial to keep the tank well-covered with occasional access to a layer of humid air above the water surface.

Behaviour

Betta Prima is best kept alone or with peaceful species due to its requirements and disposition. It can be maintained in pairs or groups, displaying interesting behavioral interactions. Compatibility exists with small cyprinids and loaches that inhabit similar environments in nature.

Feeding and Diet

In the wild, Betta Prima preys on insects and small invertebrates. In captivity, they accept dried foods but should be regularly offered live or frozen food such as Daphnia, Artemia, or bloodworms. Small insects like crickets or fruit flies can also be suitable, ensuring a varied diet to maintain optimal health.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Betta Prima is a paternal mouthbrooder, requiring a separate breeding tank for successful reproduction. After a courtship ritual, the male fertilizes the eggs, which are then mouthed by the female before being released for the male to brood. Males exhibit larger size, more iridescent scaling, and extended fins compared to females.

Habitat and Distribution

The species inhabits forest swamps and streams with clear, stained water and minimal dissolved mineral content. Betta Prima is commonly found in southeastern Thailand, parts of the Mekong basin, Cambodia, Laos, and southern Vietnam. Localities span from Chantaburi in Thailand to Sihanoukville in Cambodia, with varying habitats based on water flow and vegetation.
