General Description

The Betta Sp. 'Antuta/Bulungan' is a hypothetically-undescribed species that likely belongs to the Betta unimaculata complex within the genus Betta. These fish have long, slender bodies and large blunt heads. With a rounded caudal fin and short, filamentous pelvic fins, they exhibit typical characteristics of Betta species.

Aquarium Setup

For Betta Sp. 'Antuta/Bulungan,' a fully-decorated aquarium setup is preferred by many breeders. Driftwood, roots, and branches can be included to create hiding spots. Avoiding substrates for easy maintenance, the addition of dried leaf litter and clay plant pots for shelter is recommended. Dim lighting and Asian plant species like Microsorum pteropus and Taxiphyllum barbieri can thrive in such conditions. A layer of floating vegetation can help diffuse light, and some water movement is preferred for this species.

Behaviour

Although Betta Sp. 'Antuta/Bulungan' is generally best kept alone due to some squabbling, a group can be maintained in a sufficiently sized tank with ample hiding places. Despite occasional male-to-male aggression, these fish are relatively peaceful.

Feeding and Diet

In their natural habitat, Betta Sp. 'Antuta/Bulungan' likely feeds on insects and invertebrates. They readily accept dried foods but thrive on a varied diet including live or frozen foods like Daphnia, bloodworms, and small insects. Care should be taken to prevent overfeeding to avoid obesity and potential health issues.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

This species is a paternal mouthbrooder and has been successfully bred in aquarium settings. Male Betta Sp. 'Antuta/Bulungan' grow larger than females, display more iridescent scaling on their bodies, and develop extended fins as they mature. Their head profile is stockier due to their responsibility for mouthbrooding eggs and fry.

Habitat and Distribution

Betta Sp. 'Antuta/Bulungan' is believed to inhabit flowing, highland streams. The collection locality for this species is reported to be in the jungle of Bulungan in East Kalimantan province, located in northern Indonesian Borneo.
