General Description
Betta Unimaculata is part of the Betta unimaculata complex within the Osphronemidae family, characterized by a long, slender body, blunt head, and unique coloration including yellowish to brown body in males. This species is equipped with a labyrinth organ, allowing it to breathe atmospheric air. They are known as paternal mouthbrooders, with males growing larger and more colorful than females.
Aquarium Setup
Betta Unimaculata can thrive in a fully-decorated aquarium without a substrate, with driftwood, roots, branches, clay pots, and leaf litter providing shelter and natural habitat simulation. Dim lighting and aquatic plants like Microsorum pteropus are recommended, along with gentle filtration and access to a layer of humid air above the water surface.
Behaviour
Not ideally suited for standard community setups, Betta Unimaculata prefers being alone or with peaceful species due to its disposition. They can be kept in pairs for breeding or in larger groups in spacious tanks. Courtship involves colorful displays from males, and the species is known to be a paternal mouthbrooder.
Feeding and Diet
In the wild, Betta Unimaculata feeds on insects and small invertebrates, but in captivity, they accept dried products alongside live or frozen foods like Daphnia and bloodworms. Overfeeding should be avoided as they are prone to obesity, and young fry can be fed microworms and Artemia nauplii.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Breeding Betta Unimaculata requires a separate tank with a tight cover to ensure proper development of fry. Compatible pairs can be allowed to form organically, with males exhibiting elaborate courtship behaviors. Female and male both care for fertilized eggs, with males mouthbrooding until the fry are released.
Habitat and Distribution
Native to parts of the Kajan and Howong river drainages in Kalimantan Timur, Borneo, Betta Unimaculata is found in various habitats from flowing streams to forested areas. Populations from different localities display distinct color variations and should not be hybridized in captivity to preserve pure bloodlines.
