General Description

"Macropodus erythropterus", commonly known as the red-backed paradisefish, is a species occasionally found in the ornamental trade. It can be identified by its forked caudal fin, pale opercular spot, and reddish coloring on various fins in live specimens. This fish has a unique respiratory organ called the labyrinth, allowing it to breathe atmospheric air to some extent.

Aquarium Setup

This species can thrive in a fully-decorated aquarium, with some breeders opting not to use substrate for easier maintenance. Including driftwood, roots, branches, and floating vegetation is recommended, especially for breeding purposes. Dried leaf litter can be added to simulate a natural environment and provide hiding spots for the fish.

Behaviour

Macropodus erythropterus is typically peaceful unless during breeding periods. It can be kept in pairs or groups, displaying intriguing behavioral interactions, particularly in group settings.

Feeding and Diet

In their natural habitat, these fish feed on insect larvae and similar prey. In captivity, they should be offered small live or frozen options like Daphnia, Artemia, white worm, and grindal worm. They may also accept high-quality dried food products.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Male Macropodus erythropterus are larger than females and possess extended soft rays in their dorsal, anal, and caudal fins. These bubble nesters reproduce best in soft water with slightly higher temperatures. The male constructs a nest within surface vegetation and performs intricate courtship displays to attract females.

Habitat and Distribution

Found in coastal river systems of central Vietnam, including the Quảng Trị, Cam Lo, and Giang rivers, "Macropodus erythropterus" inhabits hill streams with overhanging vegetation and submerged roots. Their distribution may extend to other river basins within the region.
