General Description
A bizarre and recent addition to the genus, Osphronemus Exodon, also known as the Elephant Ear Gourami, features specially adapted mouthparts with enlarged teeth used for picking fruits. This species is uncommonly imported to the hobby and is recognized by its distinct dentition and large gill covers.
Aquarium Setup
For the Elephant Ear Gourami, a tank of at least 680 liters is recommended, with shelter provided through water-worn rocks and large bogwood pieces. Despite being herbivorous, floating plants are preferred, although they might be consumed, and robust filtration is crucial due to the fish's messy nature.
Behaviour
Typically, this fish can coexist harmoniously with tankmates like knifefish, large barbs, catfish, and Loricariids when provided with ample space. However, in confined aquariums, some adults may display heightened aggression.
Feeding and Diet
Being primarily herbivorous, the Elephant Ear Gourami's diet should include dried vegetable pellets supplemented with leafy greens like spinach or lettuce, along with fruits such as cucumber and tomato. Occasional live or frozen foods can be offered but in moderation.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Although not observed in captivity, its breeding behavior is likely akin to its relative, O. goramy, involving nest-building by the male and protection of the eggs until hatching. Gender distinctions in this species remain unknown.
Habitat and Distribution
In the wild, Osphronemus Exodon inhabits slow-moving regions of large rivers and ventures into flooded forests during the rainy season, migrating back to permanent water bodies as the floods recede. It is commonly found in Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia.
