General Description:
The Giant Gourami (Osphronemus Goramy) is an incredibly hardy and long-lived fish that can survive for over 20 years in captivity. Known to develop a real personality, these fish are often sold as juveniles without adequate information on their adult size. They exhibit attractive barred patterning when young, which fades as they quickly grow. Additionally, a golden variety of this species is present in aquariums.
Aquarium Setup:
For the Giant Gourami, a minimum tank size of 700 litres is recommended. The tank should include hiding spots with robust large rocks and bogwood. While floating plants are preferred, they might be consumed by the fish. Proper filtration is crucial due to the species' messy nature. It is also advised to maintain water conditions within a pH range of 6.5-8.0, a temperature range of 20-30°C, and a water hardness of 5-25°dH.
Behaviour:
The Giant Gourami is generally peaceful with larger fish but may prey on smaller tankmates. Inadequate tank size can contribute to individual fish becoming overly aggressive. Given ample space, they can coexist harmoniously with knifefish, large catfish, and loricariids.
Feeding and Diet:
Being omnivorous and adaptable, the Giant Gourami readily accepts various food types like pellets, frozen foods, and vegetable matter. In the wild, their diet also includes amphibians and occasionally carrion.
Reproduction & Dimorphism:
Breeding Giant Gouramis is relatively easy, requiring a large tank for mature adults. They reach sexual maturity around 6 months, with breeding usually more successful using younger fish. The male constructs a nest out of vegetation, where spawning takes place. After 24-36 hours, the eggs hatch, and the male guards the fry for 2-3 weeks. Males are distinguished by pointed dorsal and anal fins.
Habitat and Distribution:
Found in swamps, large rivers, and stagnant water bodies, the Giant Gourami's natural habitat spans regions like Borneo, Java, Sumatra, Thailand, Indo-china, and the Malay Peninsula.
