General Description
The Giant Red Tail Gourami (Osphronemus Laticlavius), a member of the Osphronemidae family, is a relatively rare species in the aquarium trade, being formally described by science in the early 1990s. It is prized for its striking appearance, with adult specimens showcasing bright red fin edges with filamentous extensions and a body color that ranges from blue-green to almost black.
Aquarium Setup
When setting up an aquarium for the Osphronemus Laticlavius, it is crucial to provide ample space, with a minimum tank size of 680 litres to accommodate its potential size of up to 50.0cm. The setup should include shelter in the form of water-worn rocks and large pieces of bogwood. Additionally, floating plants are recommended, although they may be consumed by the fish. Effective and robust filtration is essential due to the species' messy nature.
Behaviour
The Giant Red Tail Gourami is generally peaceful towards larger tank mates. While it may prey on smaller fish, aggression, if present, is often a consequence of inadequate tank size. When given sufficient room, this fish can coexist harmoniously with other sizeable species such as knifefish, large barbs, catfish, and Loricariids.
Feeding and Diet
As an omnivorous species, Osphronemus Laticlavius displays an unfussy appetite and readily accepts various foods like pellets, frozen foods, and vegetable matter. Due to its herbivorous inclinations, a diet rich in plant-based foods is recommended to support its nutritional needs.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Although breeding behavior in captivity has not been extensively documented, it is speculated that the Giant Red Tail Gourami may follow a reproductive strategy akin to its relative, O. goramy. In this process, the male constructs a nest using vegetation, guards the eggs, and cares for the fry post-hatching. Males are believed to exhibit more vibrant colors than females.
Habitat and Distribution
Indigenous to Indonesia and Malaysia, the Osphronemus Laticlavius likely inhabits slow-moving rivers and stagnant bodies of water. During the rainy season, it may venture into flooded regions, mirroring the habits of other members within its genus.
Specialized Water Conditions
Maintaining water conditions within a pH range of 6.5-8.0, a temperature between 20-30°C, and a hardness of 5-25°dH is essential for the health and well-being of the Giant Red Tail Gourami.
