Behaviour

With its retiring nature and slow movement, the Parasphaerichthys Lineatus is easily intimidated or outcompeted for food by more active or larger tankmates, making careful selection essential. While not a schooling species, it thrives on interaction with its own kind and displays more interesting behavior in groups, suggesting a purchase of no less than 6 individuals for a community tank. Ideal companions include peaceful, pelagic cyprinids and small rasbora species.

Feeding and Diet

As a micropredator, the species primarily feeds on small aquatic crustaceans, insect larvae, worms, and zooplankton. Although it may be initially reluctant to accept prepared foods, regular offerings of live or frozen fare like Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, or micro worms are beneficial for optimal coloration and conditioning.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

The Parasphaerichthys Lineatus displays unique courtship behavior during reproduction; males undergo a color transformation, emitting croaking sounds to attract ripe females. Spawning typically occurs near sheltered areas or along the substrate. Sexual dimorphism is evident, with females being larger and more robust, while males exhibit bicolored patterning during courtship. Parental care and fry development vary, with incubation lasting 3-5 days and fry needing microscopic foods initially.

Aquarium Setup

For optimal conditions, a well-planted aquarium with soft substrate, driftwood, floating plants, and leaf litter is recommended. The species prefers still or sluggish water, so gentle filtration is advised. Addition of plastic piping or leaf litter provides refuges and enhances the tank's structural complexity.

Habitat and Distribution

Originating from the Hmoain pool in the northern region of the Irrawaddy river delta near Einme, Myanmar, P. lineatus can be endemic to other parts of the delta, although the full extent of its distribution remains unclear. The species thrives in clear, slow-moving waters with temperatures ranging from 17.2-30°C, pH levels between 6.5-8.0, and hardness levels of 36-215ppm.
