General Description

The Trichopsis schalleri, commonly known as the Mekong croaking gourami or three-stripe gourami, is characterized by its larger size compared to its congeners and distinguished by a single solid dark midlateral stripe on the body. It possesses a unique pectoral mechanism that allows the production of audible sounds during interactions, such as during courtship. As a bubble nester, this species thrives in still to slow-moving habitats with dense aquatic vegetation.

Aquarium Setup

For T. schalleri, a well-planted aquarium with ample surface cover like tall stem plants, floating species, or tropical lilies is ideal. Use driftwood and attach plants like Microsorum or Taxiphyllum spp. for additional shelter. Including items such as small clay pots or plastic piping offers hiding spots. Adding dried leaf litter aids in microbe growth, providing a secondary food source for fry. To mimic its natural habitat, avoid strong water movement and ensure the tank has a tight cover for occasional access to humid air above the water surface.

Behaviour

While generally peaceful, T. schalleri may exhibit aggression during breeding. It can be housed in pairs or groups, showcasing interesting behavioural interactions, especially when in a group setting. These fish utilize specialized acoustic signals to settle conflicts without causing physical harm, as well as during courtship to initiate spawning through purring sounds produced by females.

Feeding and Diet

In the wild, T. schalleri likely feeds on insects and small invertebrates. In captivity, they readily accept dried foods but should be supplemented with small live or frozen options like Daphnia, Artemia, or chironomid larvae to maintain optimal health and coloration. Providing varied food sources ensures the development and well-being of these fish.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

During reproduction, soft water with a slightly raised temperature stimulates breeding behavior in T. schalleri. The male constructs a bubble nest, and spawning occurs beneath it with the male wrapping around the female in an embrace. After spawning, the male cares for the eggs until they hatch. Males are larger than females and exhibit extended fin rays, with sexually mature individuals easily sexed using a light to visualize internal organs.

Habitat and Distribution

Found in various still to slow-moving lowland habitats like swamp forests, river tributaries, and paddy fields, T. schalleri prefer areas dense with aquatic or riparian vegetation. The species is native to the lower Mekong River basin across Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam, as well as in the Chao Phraya watershed in Thailand and adjacent drainages.
