General Description
Scleropages inscriptus, a member of the Osteoglossidae family, is distinguished by its unique angulated linear markings on the dermal bones of the circumorbital and opercular series, as well as the sides of the head and flanks. With a maximum size reaching 60.0cm, this species has an unclear distribution, although specimens in the aquarium trade are believed to originate from the Tenasserim river basin in the Tananthayi Region of southern Myanmar.
Aquarium Setup
This species necessitates a tank with a minimum capacity of 10000 litres, with detailed specifications mentioned in the setup table. Creating an environment that mimics its natural habitat is crucial for the well-being of S. inscriptus. Providing ample hiding places, a sandy substrate, and suitable water parameters (see table) are essential for maintaining these fish in captivity.
Behaviour
Scleropages inscriptus is likely an obligate predator, preying on smaller fish, crustaceans, and other invertebrates in the wild. In a captive setting, they readily adapt to a diet of chironomid larvae, earthworms, prawns, mussels, live river shrimp, and various fish flesh. The consumption of mammalian or avian meat, as well as feeder fish like livebearers or goldfish, should be avoided to prevent health complications.
Feeding and Diet
Young S. inscriptus can be fed chironomid larvae, small earthworms, chopped prawns, while adult specimens accept strips of fish flesh, whole prawns, mussels, and larger earthworms. Dried pellets can also be offered but should not be the primary source of nutrition to ensure a balanced diet and optimal health for the fish.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Information regarding the reproductive habits and dimorphism of S. inscriptus is not provided, and further research may be required to understand the breeding behaviors and specific physical differences between male and female individuals of this species.
Habitat and Distribution
While the exact habitat preferences of Scleropages inscriptus are not detailed, the species is believed to inhabit the Tenasserim river basin in the Tananthayi Region of southern Myanmar. The type locality of this species is thought to be the Tananthayi district, where specimens were obtained from an aquarium fish vendor at Meik.
