General Description
The Rabbit Snail, scientifically known as Tylomelania sp., is a freshwater snail native to Lake Matano in Sulawesi, Indonesia. Its unique appearance includes a bunny-like face with elongated head, drooping yellow antennae "ears," and a long, downturned mouth. This species moves along the substrate using its muscular foot in deliberate steps, dragging its spiraling unicorn-horn shell.
Aquarium Setup
The Rabbit Snail requires a minimum tank size of 120 litres with water conditions of pH 6.5-7.5, a temperature range of 20.0-23.3°C, and a carbonate hardness (KH) level between 2-15.
Behavior
Known for their peaceful temperament, Rabbit Snails are fascinating to observe as they scour the aquarium in search of leftover food and detritus. While they primarily feed on algae and plant matter, they may occasionally nibble on aquatic plants like Java Ferns.
Feeding and Diet
As omnivores, Rabbit Snails have a varied diet that consists of algae, plant matter, and detritus. They are efficient cleaners in the aquarium, contributing to the maintenance of a healthy aquatic environment.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
In suitable conditions, Rabbit Snails reproduce at a moderate pace in home aquariums. Unlike many other snail species, they give birth to 1-3 well-formed "babies" encased in individual milky-white egg sacs, preventing rapid population growth.
Habitat and Distribution
Endemic to Lake Matano in Sulawesi, Indonesia, Rabbit Snails inhabit lacustrine environments. These snails thrive in freshwater conditions and are specifically adapted to their unique natural habitat.
