General Description
The Pederson cleaner shrimp, also referred to as the Caribbean Anemone Shrimp, is endemic to the Western part of the tropical Atlantic and Caribbean oceans. Sporting a clear brown hue, they are further accentuated with striking purple and blue markings. Their notable feature includes large front claws, displaying the same exquisite purple and blue patterns. These shrimp act as cleaner shrimp, using their prominent antennae to attract fish for cleaning, with some fish even permitting them to clean inside their mouths.
Aquarium Suitability
The Pederson cleaner shrimp thrives in reef aquariums, particularly those teeming with live rock for foraging and hiding. While they can establish relationships with various anemone species, it is not mandatory for their well-being. These shrimp attract larger fish to clean parasites off them, making it essential not to house them with any fish or invertebrates that pose a threat to their safety.
Care and Hardiness
Categorized as easy to care for, these shrimp exhibit a peaceful temperament in aquarium settings. To maintain their well-being, ensure the water conditions remain within the specified parameters: a carbonate hardness (kh) of 8-12, a pH level of 8.1-8.4, and a salinity level (sg) of 1.023-1.025. Additionally, supplement their diet with calcium, magnesium, iodine, and trace elements.
Reef Suitability
Being reef-compatible, the Pederson cleaner shrimp adds both functionality and aesthetic appeal to reef environments.
Aquarium Setup
A suitable aquarium setup for the Pederson cleaner shrimp should include ample live rock for hiding and foraging. Careful consideration should be made to ensure that no aggressive fish or invertebrates share the same aquarium space.
Behaviour
Known for their peaceful demeanor, these shrimp play a crucial role in maintaining the cleanliness of the aquatic environment by cleaning parasites off larger fish.
Feeding and Diet
As omnivores, Pederson cleaner shrimp will readily consume most meat- or fish-based diets provided in the aquarium.
Habitat and Distribution
Endemic to the Western part of the tropical Atlantic and Caribbean oceans, the Pederson cleaner shrimp thrives in coral reef habitats, forming associations with various anemone species for protection and foraging opportunities.
