General Description

Previously known as Pangasius sutchi, the Pangasionodon Hypophthalmus, commonly referred to as the Iridescent Shark Catfish, is a popular Pangasiid catfish in the aquarium trade. It is recognizable for its silvery-blue coloration and is often sold as a small juvenile without sufficient information about its long-term care needs. Selectively-bred strains such as albino and 'shortbody/balloon' variations are particularly favored in the trade.

Aquarium Setup

In setting up an aquarium for the Iridescent Shark Catfish, it is essential to provide ample space due to its potential size, with a minimum tank size requirement of 14580 litres. Decor is not crucial for adult fish, but if desired, large pieces of bogwood, beech branches, or rocks can be added. A dimly lit environment is preferred, alongside well-oxygenated, flowing water to mimic its riverine habitat. A large biological filter is necessary to manage the waste produced, and a secure lid is recommended as the fish may breach the surface during periods of nervous behavior.

Behaviour

The Iridescent Shark Catfish is not inherently aggressive but may consume smaller tank mates. It can exhibit relentless activity, which might disturb sedentary or shy companions. However, it is easily intimidated by aggressive species. This catfish prefers the company of large, peaceful bottom-dwellers and mid to upper water shoaling species for optimal tank compatibility.

Feeding and Diet

This omnivorous species requires a diet rich in protein during its juvenile stage, including foods like chopped earthworms, bloodworms, and dry pellets. As it matures, a shift towards more vegetable matter like spinach leaves, peas, Spirulina-based foods, and occasional fruit slices is essential for a balanced diet.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Reproduction of the Iridescent Shark Catfish involves migration upstream during late spring and summer, making breeding unlikely in home aquariums due to their large size and specific spawning conditions. Sexual dimorphism is subtle, with supposed differences in stockiness and light patterning between males and females that are challenging to discern at the typical juvenile sale size.

Habitat and Distribution

This pelagic species is native to the lower Mekong River in Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam, as well as the Chao Phraya River in Thailand. Most specimens in the trade are bred in mass quantities, with commercial breeding operations in the Far East. In the wild, they inhabit main river channels and larger tributaries.
