General Description
The Paroon Shark, scientifically known as Pangasius sanitwongsei, is one of the largest freshwater fish species globally, second only to the giant Mekong catfish. It is characterized by its silvery appearance and can grow up to several feet in length. Despite being popular in the aquarium trade, it is not suitable for home aquariums due to its potential size, long lifespan of around 20 years, and the misconception that it will only grow to the size of its tank.
Aquarium Setup
The Paroon Shark requires a minimum tank size of 25,000 litres with water conditions set at a pH of 6.5-7.5, hardness of 2-30 dH, and a temperature range of 24-27°C. However, due to its large adult size and predatory nature, it is not recommended for aquarium keeping.
Behaviour
Behaviour details are not applicable due to the unsuitability of the Paroon Shark for aquarium environments.
Feeding and Diet
The Paroon Shark is omnivorous, but primarily a meat-eater in nature, with adults known to have a preference for whole dog carcasses. In captivity, a suitable diet for this species should include a variety of meat-based foods to meet its nutritional requirements.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
This migratory species moves upstream during late spring and summer months for spawning, making aquarium breeding challenging. Mature females can be distinguished from males by having rounder bellies.
Habitat and Distribution
Natively found in the lower Mekong river spanning through China, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam, along with the Chao Phraya river in Thailand. The Paroon Shark is commonly sourced from commercial farms for the aquatic trade.
