General Description

The Bolt Catfish, scientifically known as Aguarunichthys torosus, belongs to the order Siluriformes and the family Pimelodidae. Reaching a maximum size of 34.6cm, this species is also traded under the names 'Jello Band' or 'Yellow Band' catfish. The etymology of its scientific name pays homage to the Aguaruna, an indigenous people living near the Río Marañón in Peru, and the Ancient Greek word for 'fish' combined with the Latin term for 'muscular, brawny.'

Aquarium Setup

In an aquarium setup, the Bolt Catfish should ideally be kept as a single specimen due to its aggressive territorial behavior towards conspecifics. It thrives in a community tank with larger, preferably fluvial species. The species is an obligate predator, feeding on other fishes in its natural habitat. While they accept quality dried foods in captivity, offering meaty treats like white fish strips, live earthworms, and shrimp is recommended for their optimal health. Adults typically do not require daily feeding, with 2-3 meals per week being sufficient for their well-being.

Behaviour

Known for its voracious appetite, the Bolt Catfish preys on fishes small enough to fit into its capacious mouth. Its aggressive territorial nature makes it best suited for a solitary existence in community aquariums. In the wild, this species displays hunting behavior by targeting smaller fish as its primary food source.

Feeding and Diet

As an obligate predator, the Bolt Catfish primarily feeds on other fishes in its natural habitat. In captivity, they can be fed quality dried foods but offering supplementary meaty options like white fish strips, live earthworms, and shrimp is essential for their overall health. The type locality for the Bolt Catfish is recorded as 'Río Cenepa, Departamento Amazonas, Peru, approximately 4°28′S, 78°10′W, at an elevation of about 210 meters.'
